1st Union Officer Death
Ellsworth was a close personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. He was killed after cutting down a confederate flag from the roof a local inn (The Marshall House in Alexandria, Virginia). The proprietor shot him in the chest as Ellsworth was coming down the stairs. Ellsworth's body lay in state at the White House. "Remember Ellsworth" became a patriotic slogan. He is buried in his hometown of Mechanicville in the Hudson View Cemetery.
